This course explained how early turn taking impacts the development of language skills. Strategies and activities for teaching parents how to teach young children to begin to take turns nonverbally before words emerge.<\/p>\n<p>Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP as she explains the 11 prelinguistic skills all toddlers master before words emerge. <em>This is show #4 in this series.\u00a0<\/em> In this show, we&#8217;re explaining in detail Skill #3, takes turns with you during interactions.\u00a0 Turn taking means that a child takes turns during communicative interactions with others. Therapists often refer to this skill as reciprocity, or the back and forth flow we see occurring between two people. It\u2019s the yin and yang, the give and take, of communication. Turn taking is cooperative\u2014each person shares the lead so that no one is \u201cthe boss\u201d all the time. Balancing and sharing control is something we want kids with developmental delays to know how to do. Late talkers can be on either extreme, always leading or always following, and it results in problems interacting with others. When we teach a child to take turns, we\u2019re addressing those issues. When a child learns how to take turns, she also begins to understand that it\u2019s fun to keep that interaction going. She stays tuned in and responds to people who talk and play with her for longer and longer periods of time. Many times, speech-language pathologists think about turn-taking as a verbal skill, but like every other prelinguistic skill we\u2019re discussing, turn taking begins as a nonverbal activity.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is&#8230; YOU CAN MAKE IT BETTER!
