Here’s the toy list for recommended toys for Stage 2: Nonfunctional Play.<\/a><\/p>\n

Remember\u2026 <\/strong>The only way babies learn what words mean (and to talk!) is by hearing you say the same key words over and over. As you play, pick one or two key words per toy and repeat those words many times each time you play. Examples are listed for each recommended toy and you can watch demonstrations of how to use the toy in podcast #467<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Here’s my favorite toy for this stage and the best toy I\u2019ve ever found specifically for object permanence. It’s a Montessori Box with balls \u2013 there\u2019s a hole in the top for baby to drop the ball in and \u2026.\u00a0 the ball comes right out. For your key word, go with ball! Repeat it many times \u2013 high frequency modeling \u2013 \u201cHere\u2019s the ball. It\u2019s your ball. Ball. Where\u2019s the ball go? Look\u2026there\u2019s a hole \u2013 a hole for your ball. The ball goes in. Ball\u2026 in!\u00a0 Ball!\u201d<\/p>\n

A very traditional way of teaching object permanence is by covering up a toy with a blanket. For this stage, I love this soft baby doll. Cover the doll with a blanket\/wash cloth to see if a child will uncover the doll demonstrating that they understand object permanence. If can\u2019t \u2013 try something they can see through like a scarf from the tissue box from Stage 1. <\/a>Baby is your key word. Say something like, \u201cBaby! See the baby? Let\u2019s hide the baby. Ohhh\u2026 cover up baby. Where\u2019s baby? Baby! Baby!\u201d Play over and over until a child is uncovering the baby on his\/her own.<\/p>\n

ELECTRONIC TOYS<\/strong> if a child needs more help learning object permanence<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As a rule, I don\u2019t use lots of electronic toys in therapy unless a child needs it for a specific reason like here \u2013 when a child need more of cue to begin to try to remove the cover. Show a child the toy, activate the toy to play the sounds or lights, and then place the cover over the toy while it’s playing so the child can see or hear the toy even when it’s covered. Help a child uncover the toy if he\/she doesn’t try to do it on their own. Point and even tug the cover to encourage a child to try to remove the cloth.<\/p>\n

Toys to Teach\u00a0Means \u2013 End<\/h3>\n

SNAIL STRING TOY<\/b><\/p>\n

Any kind of string toy works for this stage, but I love this one!\u00a0Toddlers learn to pull the string and watch the toy move.
\nWhat do you want to use for your key word?\u00a0I\u2019d go with \u201cgo\u201d or \u201cpull\u201d as you model playing with the toy.\u00a0Set the string out \u2013 point at it first and say\u2026\u201cOoooh\u2026 look! There\u2019s the string! I pull! Pull! Pull! I pull.\u201d Over time talk about the toy too \u2013 but the concept you\u2019re teaching is means to an end, so it makes sense to me that we should talk about that too. I also love this toy because it doubles as a shape sorter with 2 levels of difficulty.<\/p>\n

This is my favorite pull toy because the people spin when the bus moves… great incentive to teach a child to look at the object he’s pulling! I use the same verbal routines for “pull” and “go” and add “spin” or “whee” here too!<\/p>\n

I wanted this toy for the course, but it wouldn’t arrive in time. I love this puppy and I know kids will too! Use animal sounds for dogs as you play – “Woof Woof!” and of course, stick your tongue out and pant!<\/p>\n

You can find lots of versions of this toy \u2013 but I like this one. Got a bumble bee on it so you can also add \u2013 zzzz or sing Bringing Home my Baby Bumble Bee. Stick anywhere \u2013 bathtub is a great spot. This toy is ideal for using a Verbal Routine like Ready\u2026 Set\u2026 Go\u00a0\u00a0 or 1 2 3 Spin!\u00a0Stop it \u2013 do it again.<\/p>\n

I love these easy push cars for Stage 2 \u2013 and will certainly be fun for a long time. You will probably have to help a child activate the car for a long time, but that\u2019s okay. The goal here is for them to recognize that you push the animal \u2013 even if they need help to do it. Key word is probably car. And be sure you\u2019re teaching a child what to do \u2013 So you\u2019ll say something like, \u201cLook! My car! See the car! My car can go. Watch the car\u2026 Push! Ready\u2026 set\u2026 go. Go car!\u201d Create anticipation with your voice.\u00a0Be super consistent \u2013 over time pause after you say \u201cReady Set\u201d to see if a child will begin to fill in \u201cGo!\u201d<\/p>\n

This toy from Bright Starts is an easy push toy for kids in Stage 2. It’s a simple motion to activate the top, but kids may need a little help for a while. Of course your key word is\u2026. \u201cPush! Watch me\u2026 I\u2026.PUSH! Wheeeee!\u201d Model it several times, then give a child an opportunity. I work on turn taking with this toy because the turns are super fast. Take it in your lap to help a child understand it\u2019s your turn.\u00a0Then move it toward them for their turn. Instead of saying \u2013 my turn\/your turn I use \u201cI push \u2013 You push\u201d or our names \u201cLaura can push\u2026.____ can push.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a super versatile classic toy. Kids are learning about how things work together\u00a0 – how they fit and the beginnings of \u201cfill and dump\u201d play. I use several different early play routines including stacking, nesting, and because there are holes in the\u00a0 bottom of the cups, you can use them for water play.\u00a0When you stack them up, use your key word for \u2018up up up\u201d and then of course, show a child how to knock them down\u2026 as you use a verbal routine like\u2026 1\u2026 2\u2026 3\u2026 boom!\u00a0 Or even something like \u201c They all\u2026 fall\u2026 dooooown!\u201d For nesting, try “Goes in!… Goes in!” For key word for water play is always\u2026 \u201cWhee!\u201d But you\u2019ll probably say something like, \u201cWater\u2026 let\u2019s get some water\u2026 see the water\u2026 fill it up\u2026. Whee!\u201d as you spin the wheels or roll the car. Give it to the child to see if he will try to push the car too.<\/p>\n
